It is the most common inherited bleeding disorder characterized by easy bruising and prolonged bleeding from mucosal surfaces. Von Willebrand factor collagen binding activity (vWF:CB) is used as supplemental assay to factor VIII activity, vWF:Ag and vWF:RCo assays in typing of vWD. vWF:CB is a measure of vWF interaction with the subendothelial collagen and shows preferential sensitivity to high molecular weight multimers (HMWM).
