What is Leptospira
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all.
-
Who is at risk?
Drinking river water without boiling it or using chemical treatment increases the risk of leptospirosis and other diseases. Leptospirosis is more common in a tropical climate, but it may also occur in the poorer parts of large cities in developing nations that are not in tropical areas.
-
How do you get leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is spread in the pee of infected animals – most commonly rats, mice, cows, pigs and dogs.
You can get leptospirosis if:
- soil or freshwater (such as water from a river, canal or lake) that contains infected pee gets in your mouth, eyes or a cut – usually during activities like kayaking, outdoor swimming or fishing
- you touch an infected animal's blood or flesh – usually from working with animals or animal parts
- It's very rare to get leptospirosis from pets, other people or bites.
-
Transmission and incubation
Urinary shedding of organisms from infected animals is the most important source of these bacterial pathogens. Contact with the organism via infected urine or urine-contaminated media results in human infection. Such media include contaminated water and food, as well as animal bedding, soil, mud, and aborted tissue.
-
Treatment and Prevention
Leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics, including penicillin and doxycycline. Your doctor may also recommend ibuprofen for fever and muscle pain The disease should run its course in about a week. Avoid contaminated water. If you're in a developing country, don't drink the water unless you're sure it's clean. But because leptospirosis can enter through other body openings, it's also a good idea to avoid swimming, waterskiing, sailing, or fishing in freshwater areas.
-
Sex- and age-related differences in incidence
No evidence suggests that leptospirosis affects persons of various races, ages, or sexes differently. However, because occupational exposure constitutes a major risk for the development of disease, a disproportionate number of working-aged males seem to be affected.

What is the cost of Leptospira?
Leptospira test costs 5000 Rs
