What Is HHV-6?
Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a set of two closely related herpes viruses known as HHV-6A and HHV-6B. HHV-6B infects nearly 100% of human beings, typically before the age of three and often results in fever, diarrhoea, sometimes a rash known as roseola.

HHV-6 in Healthy Persons
The second stage of HHV-6 infection occurs in healthy children and adults, in whom the virus actively replicates in the salivary glands, is latent in at least lymphocytes and monocytes, and persists in various tissues.
-
HHV-6 in the Immunosuppressed
The third stage of HHV-6 infection, which occurs in the immunosuppressed, is responsible for the most serious clinical manifestations associated with HHV-6 infection or reactivation. Persons at risk are recipients of bone marrow, kidney, and liver transplants, in whom immunosuppression is induced for therapeutic reasons.
-
Prognosis
HHV-6 infections that occur early in life and in immunocompetent hosts are typically uncomplicated and have a self-limited course. The prognosis of these infections is usually excellent.
-
HHV-6 receptor
When an extracellular HHV-6 virion comes across human cells, it encounters the human receptor protein cluster of differentiation 46 ( CD46 ), which plays a role in regulating the complement system. The CD46 protein possesses a single variable region, as a result of alternative splicing. As such, at least fourteen isoforms of CD46 exist, all of which bind HHV-6a.
-
Aetiology
HHV-6 disease can largely be thought of in two categories: (1) a disease of childhood that affects nearly the entire population and (2) disease of reactivation in profoundly immunosuppressed individuals.
-
What is the cost of HHV6?
The cost of HHV6 is 5000 Rs
