What is hepatitis G?
Hepatitis G virus (HGV) is a unique virus that can be transmitted hematogenous. The association of hepatitis G with the disease remains unclear, but it is estimated that approximately 0.3% of patients with acute viral hepatitis may be attributed solely to HGV.
-
Discovery of Hepatitis G Virus
Hepatitis G virus (HGV) was discovered during the study of patients who appeared to have acute non-A, non-E infection. Because clinical hepatitis seemed to develop when the virus was present, it was assumed that this was a unique virus.
-
Modes of Transmission
HGV/GBV-C can be transmitted by sharing personal items contaminated with the virus and other similar behaviours (parenterally), from a mother-to-newborn child at birth (vertical), or various sexual activities.
-
Long-Term Effects
HGV can cause chronic infection and viremia; however, there is no conclusive evidence to indicate that HGV causes fulminant or chronic liver disease. Co-infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or HCV does not seem to worsen the course or severity of the disease.
-
Prevention
If you are regularly exposed to blood or blood products from others, try to protect yourself with gloves to reduce the risk of the spread of viruses. If you use injection drugs, ensure you use clean, sterile needles. Sharing needles, syringes or other drug-use equipment with others can put you at risk of infection.
