Short Description

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) begins as a result of an uncontrolled local or systemic activation of coagulation due to an underlying disorder like snake bite, trauma, amniotic fluid / fat embolism, malignancy etc. DIC maybe acute or chronic, limited or diffuse and accompanied by hemorrhage or less commonly thrombosis. As coagulation is inappropriately & systemically activated, clotting factors and platelets are consumed leading to bleeding. Laboratory parameters usually show increased APTT & PT decreased fibrinogen increase in D-Dimer & fibrin degradation products and decreased platelet count.

PreTest Information

Overnight fasting is preferred. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent of treating Physician.
